Why clean your hairbrush?
Frequently cleaning your hairbrush is essential to take care of your hair. Many impurities like dust, dirt and dandruff can build up on a hairbrush over time. These particles can prevent the proper distribution of styling products, leaving your hair looking dull or lifeless. Plus, those same impurities can stick to your scalp and clog pores, causing scalp irritation. By taking the time to regularly clean the residue from the bristles of the brush, you will not only achieve healthier hair, a soothed scalp, but also an overall more attractive appearance.
- Cleaning your brush helps get rid of dead hair, but also of accumulated dirt or dust. These impurities can impair hair brushing, clog pores and therefore cause itchy scalp.
How to clean your hairbrush?
Cleaning your hairbrush is one of the simplest and most overlooked tasks in any beauty routine. Even if it only takes a few minutes, it can make a big difference in how your hair looks.
Step 1: Remove tangled hair
The first step is to pull the tangled hair out of the bristles. You can do this quickly and easily with your fingers or with a comb for longer strands and knotted areas. Once you've removed all the fibers and knots from your brush, it's time to move on to washing and sanitizing your brush to get rid of any dirt, oil, product buildup or hairspray residue!
- Start by removing the accumulated hair with your fingers. Feel free to use scissors to cut tougher hair.
Step 2: Clean the bristles
The next step in cleaning your hairbrush is to scrub the bristles with a mild shampoo or detergent; be sure to mix it with warm water for best results. Using a cloth dampened in warm water, gently scrub all sections of the brush to remove debris. You can also scrub gently with an old toothbrush, being careful not to damage the bristles. Then rinse thoroughly with clean water.
Another way is to mix a solution of equal parts water and white vinegar and submerge the brush for an hour. Choose a large enough glass or basin to hold the brush. Before rinsing with clean water and letting dry.
To disinfect the bristles of the brush, use baking soda which will get rid of germs and debris. Add water to baking soda to get a pasty consistency. Then spread the solution on the bristles of the brush and let it sit for about 5 minutes.
- Clean the brush with a cloth soaked in lukewarm water. If the brush requires a deeper cleaning, immerse the brush in a mixture of water and white vinegar for 1 hour. Finally, to disinfect, another choice is to rub the brush with a paste made from baking soda.
Step 3: Air dry
The third step in cleaning your hairbrush is to let it air dry. This minimizes the risk of bacteria or mold developing on the bristles if you store it damp in a drawer. Start by removing excess water from the bristles, either by manually wringing them out or by patting them with a towel. Finally, you can simply lay the brush on a towel and leave it until completely dry, which can take anywhere from one to three hours depending on how wet the brush is. It may be necessary to turn the brush after a while before each part is dry. This will extend the life of your hairbrush for many uses to come!
- Let your hairbrush air dry after blotting up excess water stuck at the base of the bristles. This process can take one to three hours. Avoid placing it near a heat source, as this may damage its material.
How often should you clean your brush?
Hairbrushes require regular maintenance to keep your hair healthy and looking its best. How often you should clean your brush depends on the frequency of use and the type of brush. Generally speaking, it's a good idea to give your brush a thorough cleaning at least once or twice a month , taking care to remove any stuck-on hairs and debris.
To prevent the bristles from getting clogged between washes, you can spray them weekly with an antibacterial spray. This will prevent dirt from settling in and damaging your hair or scalp over time. Finally, replace brushes with broken, missing or deformed bristles, as they will not be able to provide sufficient support while brushing.
- It is important to clean your hairbrush thoroughly at least once a month. Between two washes, regularly remove the hair remaining on the brush to avoid the accumulation of residues and bacteria.
